Thanks for signing up to my newsletter here on Substack.
I plan to find a rhythm, a routine to write and share, in time.
Haiku
To avoid bombarding your email account I’ve been uploading haikus to my Substack account, to date, 23 of them to be exact. Please, if you’re interested I welcome you to periodically visit my site to take them in.
I’ll continue to share haikus directly to my account and to my social media and of course I’ll include one here.
Why haikus? Well, I enjoy the challenge of making it work, 5-7-5 syllables. Like a puzzle, much like songwriting.
It’s also an act of mindfulness for me. It allows me focused time on what is in front of me, in the moment. It forces me to engage with my immediate environment and to frame my experience.
I often write new haikus in the morning, over breakfast before the day begins, as my family sleep. It’s a great way to start the day.
Haikus are my new wordle and here I share with you the haiku I wrote about a new song.
A song about cats
A song about people too
Lessons in living
Music
Speaking of new songs, I’m proud to share with you the release of City Over Sand’s new track titled Count On The Days.
The song will land on streaming platforms + Bandcamp this Friday 2 February. Here’s the link to pre save the song https://gyro.to/CountOnTheDays
And here’s a little snippet of me playing the track, much the same as it was written, at home on an acoustic guitar.
The song was produced and engineered by Brad Hosking at Blindboy Studios on the Gold Coast, Australia at various times during 2023.
What’s the song is about? It’s a song written from a cat’s perspective.
A song of simple living, of lessons to be learnt through observation.
A song that reflects a shifting reality of new routines and adjusted values in a post pandemic world.
City Over Sand = Brad Hosking | Jules Keshan | Stevie Whittington | Dan Carroll.
Guests: Cleo Hosking | Summer Hosking (The Hosking Family Choir).
Mastered by Paul Blakey at 12th & Vine Post.
If you enjoy the track I encourage you to share it with your network and please let me know what you think of it.
On Repeat.
I’ve been listening to Folkocracy by Rufus Wainwright a lot lately. It’s not my usual musical cup of tea but this record has certainly grown on me. It’s honest, collaborative, beautifully delivered, and a great example of how quality records show themselves to you over time.
As January comes to a close, as I realise the Christmas tree is still up, I want to wish you a happy new year. I look forward to sharing more writing, music, thoughts and ideas with you this year.
Thanks for connecting.
If you think someone you know might be interested in receiving my newsletter please encourage them to subscribe, it’s free. Might as well.
